How to Fix a Samsung Fridge Ice Maker That Passes Test Mode but Doesn’t Make Ice Normally

Issue:
Your Samsung refrigerator's ice maker passes the test mode and makes ice during testing but fails to produce ice in daily use. The ice maker has no ON/OFF flag arm.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis & Repair

✅ Step 1: Check the LED Sensor

  1. Remove the ice bin.

  2. Using your phone’s camera, look toward the auger motor wall behind the ice bin.

  3. Locate the LED sensor (part of the auger motor assembly).

  4. While pointing your phone camera at it, look for a red light from the LED.

    • If you see the red light — the sensor is working.

    • If no light is visible — the LED or its control board is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement.

🧰 Step 2: Remove and Inspect the Auger Assembly

  1. Remove the auger assembly from the freezer cabinet.

  2. Unscrew the cover that protects the LED components.

  3. Carefully disconnect or release the wires inside the auger assembly to fully access the LED board.

🔧 Step 3: Repair the LED Assembly (if needed)

  1. Open the plastic housing of the LED sensor carefully.

  2. Inside, you’ll find a small PCB (printed circuit board).

  3. Inspect it for signs of water damage or corrosion.Refrigerator repair chicago lets fix appliance repair

  4. Locate the 220 Ohm 1W SMD resistor on the PCB.Samsung refrigerator ice maker repair chicago

  5. Test the resistor with a multimeter:

    • If it's faulty, replace it.

    • You can use a standard (non-SMD) 220 Ohm 1W resistor as a substitute.appliance repair chicgo and suburbs

  6. Check the continuity of PCB traces from the wires to the LED and resistor.

    • Repair any broken or corroded traces.

  7. If traces are severely damaged, the best fix is to solder the resistor directly to the LED terminals.

🔄 Step 4: Reassemble and Test

  1. Put the LED board and auger assembly back together.Oven dryer washer fridge repair chicago

  2. Reinstall the assembly in the freezer.Refrigerator repair chicago

  3. Use your phone camera again to verify that the LED is now glowing red.

  4. If the LED is working, your ice maker should resume normal operation.

Notes:

  • The LED sensor helps detect the presence of the ice bin and is critical for triggering the ice production cycle.

  • Even if the ice maker passes test mode, a malfunctioning LED assembly will prevent normal operation.

  • Typical repair time: 45-60 minutes with basic tools and a soldering iron.

Why Lets Fix Appliance Repair Technicians Don’t Use a Truck When it Possible — and Why That’s a Good Thing for You

One of the most common questions we get from customers is:
“Where’s your truck?”

It’s a fair question. Traditionally, appliance repair technicians arrive in large service trucks covered with logos, ladders, and tools. It creates a sense of professionalism and trust. But times are changing, and so is how we serve you.

The Reality Behind the Truck

In a city like Chicago, our technicians often drive 120–180 miles a day, battling traffic, construction zones, and parking headaches. Large service vehicles may look impressive, but they come with a hidden cost:

  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Frequent brake service
  • Expensive maintenance and repairs
  • Insurance and permit costs

And in today’s inflation-driven economy, all of those expenses add up — fast. Who ends up paying for them? You, the customer.

Smart Transportation = Smarter Pricing

By using well-maintained, fuel-efficient passenger vehicles, we reduce operating costs significantly. We still carry all the necessary tools and common parts to perform diagnostics and most repairs on-site — just without the bulk of a truck.

And the result? Lower service call fees for you.

We’re committed to keeping our prices reasonable without compromising the quality or speed of our repairs. Choosing a smaller vehicle is one of the many ways we do that.

Efficiency Over Image

While a truck might project an old-school image of trust, we believe that transparency, great service, and affordability speak louder. We prefer to earn your trust by fixing your appliance right the first time — not by driving a flashy vehicle.

Bottom line:
No truck doesn’t mean less professionalism. It means smarter service — and more savings for you.

Washing Machine Making Noise During Spin Cycle – Motor Issue Diagnosed and Fixed in Chicago

We received a service call from a customer in Irving park reporting loud grinding and knocking noises coming from their washing machine during operation. Our technician arrived within a couple of hours and began a thorough diagnostic.

After starting the rinse and spin cycle and waiting for the washer to fill and engage, the described noise was clearly audible. It appeared to come from the motor and transmission area. The technician stopped the cycle, drained the water, and tilted the washer back to safely access the components underneath.

With the drive belt removed and the pulleys manually inspected, it was confirmed that the noise originated from the electric motor. To determine the exact cause, the technician disconnected the wiring, unscrewed the mounting bolts, and removed the motor by turning it counterclockwise.

The issue was found in the cooling impeller located at the top of the motor. This plastic fan is simply press-fitted onto a smooth shaft with no locking mechanism. Over time, it had slipped off, causing it to rattle. Unfortunately, the impeller is not available as a separate replacement part, and replacing the entire motor would have been unnecessarily expensive.

To fix it, the technician used abrasive pads to create a snug fit and reinstalled the impeller securely, preventing it from slipping in the future. All parts were reassembled in reverse order.

The washing machine now runs smoothly and quietly. The repair was completed on the first visit — efficiently and affordably.
